Why does the substrate matter more than the final effect?
Because the visible surface is only the last part of a system. Stability, moisture, flatness, cracks and joints can completely change preparation, timing and cost.
What needs checking
The assessment considers the substrate type, loose or moving areas, rising moisture or leaks, level changes, joints, door clearances and transitions. Photographs help with orientation, but they do not always replace an on-site survey.
When a survey is important
Widespread cracks, unknown build-ups, wet areas, large surfaces and significant level differences make a site visit especially valuable.
