Cocciopesto: the history of seamless surfaces.
Continuity is not a recent fashion. Binders, performance and application systems have changed, but the relationship between material, handwork, surface and architecture has a much longer history.
Lime and crushed terracotta.
Cocciopesto combines lime-based mortars with fragments of fired clay. Historically it was used for durable floors and coatings, including spaces exposed to water. Colour, aggregate size and compaction shape its character: it is a constructed material, not simply a terracotta shade.
A seamless surface rooted in Veneto.
Pastellone belongs to the culture of mineral seamless floors found in Venetian and Veneto traditions. The material is worked and compacted into a continuous plane whose subtle variations reveal skilled handwork. Today the name can also describe quite different products, so composition and application build-up should always be clarified.
Resin and microcement are not cocciopesto.
Contemporary resin and cement-based systems differ from historic techniques in formulation, thickness and performance. They do share design questions: how to avoid unnecessary interruptions, work with light and decide how much movement should remain visible. History helps frame those choices; it does not establish technical equivalence.
History becomes a practical design lens.
Understanding surface behaviour helps distinguish a uniform result from a more expressive one, matte from satin and natural artisan variation from a defect. ResinLove uses this culture to inform contemporary projects; restoration is not offered as a standalone service.
